Questions
What people ask before they start
Straight answers about payroll, loan rules, who sees what, leavers, trials, currencies and what Wola does not do.
Do we have to replace our payroll system?
No. Wola works alongside it. Each month it produces the list of deductions payroll should make, and you bring the actual deductions back so Wola can check them and flag the gaps.
Can we use our own loan rules?
Yes. Products, limits, terms, interest and approval chains are settings for your organisation, not code. Two organisations on Wola can lend in completely different ways.
Who can see employees' pay and loans?
Only the roles your organisation allows. An employee sees their own record, a line manager sees their own team, and the full book is limited to the finance, HR, executive and audit roles you choose.
What happens when someone leaves with a loan?
Leavers who still owe money are flagged to finance and HR so the balance is not forgotten, and your organisation sets the exit policy for how it is recovered.
Can we try it before we commit?
Yes. We can set up a trial organisation with your real staff list and practice loans, so your team experiences Wola the way it would work for you before anything real is loaded. It is clearly marked as practice data throughout.
Which currencies does it support?
Each organisation works in one currency, chosen when it is set up (for example Ugandan shillings), and every amount in the product is shown in it.
Do you connect directly to our payroll system?
Not yet. Wola works with files, which suits almost any payroll system: each cycle it produces the deductions your payroll should make as a CSV, and you bring the actual deductions back the same way. Wola then lists every missed or short deduction by loan and by person.
How do we get our staff list in?
HR imports a CSV of employees. The import checks every row first and changes nothing if any row is wrong. Importing again later updates people by employee number, so the same file also works as a payroll refresh. Pay, probation status and work emails can be filled in inside Wola.
What does the borrower see before they say yes?
The monthly deduction, the rate, the total interest and the total to repay, worked out the same way as the repayment schedule. The borrower accepts those exact terms in the app, and the terms are stored with the date they were accepted.
Can we limit how much of someone's pay goes on loans?
Yes. As well as the limits on each loan product, an organisation can set one cap on all loan deductions together, as a share of take-home pay. It is off until you set it.
Do borrowers need to install an app?
No. Wola runs in a web browser, on a phone or a computer. Borrowers sign in, apply, see their loans and their next deduction, and managers see what is waiting for them.
How does an organisation sign in?
Every organisation has its own address, for example yourcompany.wola.africa. If you do not remember it, enter your organisation's short name on the sign-in finder and it takes you there.
How is our data kept apart from other organisations'?
By the database itself, not only by the application. Every organisation's records carry its identity, and the database refuses to return another organisation's rows, even if a mistake were made in the application. Read more on the security page.
How is Wola priced?
A flat monthly price by team size, with every feature and every role in every plan. You pay for how many people work for you, not for the number of loans or the people who sign in. Pay a year in advance and get 2 months free. The pricing page shows every plan.
We run several companies. Do we pay for each one?
No. Each company gets its own organisation on Wola, with its own staff, rules and approvers, and the group is billed once: we add up the staff of every company and charge the band for the total. Three companies of 150 staff pay the Growth price for 450 staff, not three Standard prices.
Who is behind Wola?
Wola is a product of Synsify, a company based in Ntinda, Kampala, Uganda. The people who build Wola are the people who help you with it.
